This was a really interesting movie. Pauline Kael points out some of the flaws in her essay for Criterion, but overall it’s a really cool way of dealing with how mostly apolitical people could get involved with organizations like the Gestapo.
I think the best part is that most of the people in it weren’t actors. The main actor, Pierre Blaise, hadn’t even seen many movies and had never acted before. It makes for really low-key, realist performances.
